Kolkata observations

Kolkata air isn’t that bad. Perhaps it is the time of the year that makes difference too. I remember smelling heavy smog when our flight from France first started descending to Delhi. I haven’t smelled that much smog ever since. It is possible that I got used to it.

In Kolkata, driving time is about five minutes per kilometer. If someone says they live about 12 kilometers away, that means it takes them an hour to get there. In most areas, the speed of a motorized vehicle is about the same as the speed of a rickshaw. By the way, Kolkata is the last place in India that have non-bicycle rickshaws.

When we were in Serampore, walking through the streets from Sri Yukteswar’s hermitage to the nearby Ghat, it felt like travelling back in time to any year within the last couple of centuries if you can just erase the cell phones and motorized vehicles. It is as if things didn’t change much within the last few centuries. Open sewer systems, rickshaws, people bathing on the side of the streets, it’s quite a scene.
